Abstract

Harbour noise is one of the environtmental health problems that cause adverse health effect such as physiological disturbances which can lead to hypertension. The objective of this study was to know the correlation between noise intensity from Boom Baru Palembang Harbour and the risk of hypertension on women who live in Sabokingking Residence. This research is a analytical study and cross-sectional studies approach was designed to conduct this research. 90 housewives in Sabokingking Residence who selected through simple random sampling were taken for interview and blood preassure measurement. Measurement of noise intensity is carried out at ten locations with a radius of every location is 100 meters from the harbour. Data was analyzed by univariate and bivariate using Chi-Square. The research resulted that the average of noise intensity in 24 hours measurement (LDN) was 57.79 dB(A) which is higher than the Threshold Limit Value for residential area. It showed that 54.4% of housewives who live in Sabokingking Resindence suffered from hypertension. Based on statistical analysis that that there is correlation between noise from Boom Baru Harbour to the risk of hypertension on women who live in Sabokingking Residence (p-value=0.026; PR=1.78). Also, factors related to hypertension were age (p-value = 0.001; PR = 1.97) and the distance of house to harbour (p-value = 0.001; PR = 2.06). The conclusion of this research was harbour noise is related to hypertension on housewives. Checking blood pressure and reducing noise intensity need to be done to reduce the impact of noise exposure.
