Abstract

Peat soils are soils formed from the remains of plants and other living things that have very high levels of organic matter and develop in stagnant conditions (anaerobic). Peatlands is an important part of the global carbon cycle and a concern for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Peatlands store around 2150 - 2875 ton C/ha with a absorption rate of 0.01-0.03 Gt C/year. Reduction of carbon storage in peatlands is caused by forest fires or conversion of peatlands into plantations or agricultural land. If peatland forests are cut down or burned, the climate will increase due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHG). This research aims to determine the difference in the value of bulk density characteristics using the Gravimetric method and C-organic using the Walkey and Black method on post-burned and unburned peatlands and the difference in the amount of soil carbon reserves on post-burned and unburned peatlands. The results of this study showed that the lowest bulk density value was found in unburned peatlands 0.19 - 0.21 g/cm3 and the highest value in post-burned peatlands with an average of 0.19 - 0.31 g/cm3. The lowest C-organic value was found on post-burned land with an average of 33.3 - 45.61% and the highest value on unburned land with an average of 39.54 - 47.78%. The total amount of carbon stock on unburned land of 6,138.20 tons is higher than on post-burned land with a total carbon stock of 4,547.83 tons. The total carbon stock in the research location with an area of 4 hectares was 10,686.03 tons. The high value of carbon stocks on unburned land is due to the thickness of peat on unburned land where peat thickness is the main factor in determining the high total carbon stocks
