Abstract

The danger of smoking is the negative impact caused by the habit of smoking on a person's health and quality of life. This study aims to determine how students understand the dangers of smoking in SMP Negeri 32 Palembang. This research is a descriptive study. The population in this study consists of all 169 seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 32 Palembang. The sample in this study consists of 63 respondents selected using simple random sampling technique. Data collection technique involves a test of understanding of the dangers of smoking, which is analyzed using percentage analysis. The results obtained from the research show that the majority of students have a sufficient level of understanding, with 35 students (56%) classified as having a good understanding, followed by 19 students (30%) with a fair understanding, and 9 students (14%) with a poor understanding. These results have important implications in the context of education and smoking prevention among teenagers. Although most students already have a decent basic understanding of the dangers of smoking, it indicates the need for further efforts to enhance students' understanding of the hazards associated with smoking. Further analysis of the understanding aspects revealed that students have the highest understanding of the dangers of nicotine addiction (average score 11), followed by understanding the contents of cigarettes (average score 10), and the lowest aspect is classifying the impacts of smoking (average score 6) Keywords: Understanding, Smoking hazards.
