Abstract
Due to the rapid increase of infrastructure demand, the use of waste materials and by-products from different industries has been gaining significantly. Lightweight geopolymer concrete is an environment-friendly innovation that combines the characteristics of a lightweight concrete and the advantages of a geopolymer concrete. The use of fly ash as the precursor replaces the use of Portland cement as the binder, therefore decreasing the production of CO2. The main focus of this research is to determine the effects of magnesium sulfate attacks on the density and compressive strenght at the age of 28 and 56 days after curing, using three different conditions: without submersion, full submersion, and wet-dry conditions. In this investigation, the binder is low-calcium fly ash (FA) and the alkali activator is sodium hydroxide of 12 molarity and sodium silicate. Other materials used are fine aggregates, superplasticizer, and foam. The ratio of fine aggregate and precursor is 2:1,whereas the ratio of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide is 5:2. The treatment of the specimen is carried out at an oven temperature of 60° C for 24 hours. The highest decrease in density and compression strength showed as a result of magnesium sulfate attack in wet-dry conditions after 56 days. The highest decrease in percentage of density and compressive strength showed 5,773% and 32,606%, respectively.
