Abstract
The study focuses on advancing dissimilar metal welding techniques. The intense heat during welding leads to thermal expansion or contraction of the metal upon cooling, resulting in residual stresses in the weld area. Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is employed to alleviate these residual stresses. The research investigates the impact of PWHT on the mechanical and physical properties of joints between AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel and AISI 1037 carbon steel. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is the chosen welding process, with PWHT carried out using a Ceramic Heating Pad (CHP) at temperatures of 600°C, 650°C, and 700°C, held for 2 hours, followed by gradual cooling. A battery of tests, including tensile, Vickers hardness, composition, metallographic, X-ray Diffraction, SEM, and EDS line analysis, was conducted. The results highlight that sensitization at 700°C adversely affects tensile strength and hardness. Tensile strength remains consistent without PWHT and with PWHT at 600°C and 650°C, but significantly drops at 700°C. Hardness generally decreases with higher PWHT temperatures, except at 700°C where it rises. The microstructure of AISI 1037 carbon steel shifts towards more ferrite with increasing PWHT temperature, though this trend reverses at 700°C. SEM and EDS analyses reveal the presence of Cr carbides at grain boundaries, formed through rapid carbon atom diffusion and Cr combination.
