Abstract

SUMMARY CHILI FARMERS' SURVIVAL STRATEGY IN MEETING HOUSEHOLD NEEDS IN KARANG ENDAH SELATAN VILLAGE, GELUMBANG DISTRICT, MUARA ENIM REGENCY The productivity of chili plants is still a problem faced by some chili farmers, especially chili farmers who have limited land and limited capital. The average income for chili farmers depends on the yield and production price. The focus of this research is on how survival strategies and inhibiting factors of chili farmers in meeting household needs in South Karang Endah Village. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and documentation. The theory used in this study is the concept of survival strategy according to (Suharto, 2009) which suggests that survival strategies are divided into three types, namely active strategies, passive and strategic network strategies. The results of this study show that the survival strategy used by chili farmers is the application of survival strategies carried out by chili farmers in meeting household needs in South Karang Endah Village as a way for chili farming families to overcome obstacles regarding the weakness of family income with continuously increasing family needs. Utilizing all the potential and abilities possessed, namely looking for other jobs, employing family members. passive strategy, implementing and saving household expenses. Network strategy, utilizing social networks to solve problems. Chili farming risk is production risk stemming from erratic weather/climate and crop pests, limited capital risk and risk of sharp price fluctuations. Chili farmers continue to grow chilies to meet household needs.
