Abstract

Background: Various infections in the oral cavity can be caused by bacteria, one of which is S. mutans. One way to reduce the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity is by using chlorhexidine mouthwash. To avoid the side effects caused by using chlorhexidine mouthwash, antibacterial alternatives made from natural ingredients are used. Catfish (Pangasius hypopthalmus) which is widely cultivated in South Sumatera has contains active amino acids and fatty acids which are thought to have potential effect as an antibacterial agents as a substitute for chlorhexidine. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of catfish meat extract against S. mutans. Method: This research was an in vitro laboratory experimental study with post-test only control group design in 5 treatment groups consisting of catfish meat extract with concentration of 25%, 50%, 75%, aquadest as a negative control, and 0,2% chlorhexidine gluconate as a positive control. Extraction of catfish meat using 96% ethanol solvent with maceration method. Antibacterial activity test used the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method with Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. Results: The results of the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test showed that there was no inhibition zone at all concentrations of catfish meat extract tested. Conclusion: Catfish (Pangasius hypopthalmus) meat extract with the concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% had no antibacterial activity against S. mutans.
