Abstract

Background: Heart failure is a condition where the heart is unable to fulfill the body's need for blood due to structural or functional abnormalities in the heart. The common symptom is the accumulation of fluid in the body, called congestion. Diuretics are the first-line symptomatic therapy to reduce this symptom. Inappropriate use of diuretics can lead to diuretic resistance. A study of drug utilization is needed to evaluate drug administration in patients to decrease morbidity and mortality in heart failure patients.Methods: This drug utilization study was conducted at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from October to November 2023. 106 samples met the inclusion criteria, which are heart failure patients who are using diuretics. The sampling technique used was total sampling. Data were analyzed using SPSS V25 in the form of frequency distribution.Results: The prevalence of heart failure patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang was 2.59%, and those who used diuretics were 43.08%. The characteristics of the samples are mostly 41–60 years old (45.3%), male (59.4%), high school/equivalent (60.4%), and working as civil servants/private workers (35.8%). The rational use of diuretics was 100% appropriate dose, 95.28% appropriate frequency, 97,16% appropriate duration of administration, 100% appropriate method of administration, 97.16% appropriate interaction, and 98,11% appropriate contraindications.Conclusion: The use of diuretics in heart failure patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang is rational.
