Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive muscle disorder over time, characterized by a significant reduction in muscle mass due to the aging process. The mechanisms underlying sarcopenia vary and are not fully understood. There are many risk factors associated with the development of sarcopenia, including age, gender, socio-economic factors, physical activity, and comorbidities. Early detection of sarcopenia is crucial to prevent its complications through timely screening using the SARC-F questionnaire. This study aims to assess the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly patients at the Geriatrics Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital in Palembang. Methods: This study is an observational descriptive research with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected through total sampling based on certain criteria. The data were obtained through interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed using univariate analysis. Results: Patients in the sarcopenia group were mostly aged 70-79 years (41.9%), female (64.5%), married (58.1%), education level of elementary school (32.3%), having a history of employment (58.1%), mild comorbidities (58.1%), sedentary physical activity (74.2%), and at risk of malnutrition (54.8%). Conclusion: A total of 48.4% of the elderly patients at the Geriatrics Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital in Palembang are diagnosed with sarcopenia.
