Abstract

Rice is a staple food consumed by the majority of people in Indonesia, one of which is in the Indralaya Indah sub-district, Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency. The objectives of this research are: (1) Comparing the quantity and quality of rice consumed by households in the Indralaya Indah sub-district before and after the increase in rice prices and seeing the influence of price on household decisions to buy rice based on quality. (2) Compare household food and non-food expenditure in the sub-district before and after the increase in rice prices. (3) Calculate the elasticity of demand for premium and medium rice towards price and income before and after the price increase. This research is located in Indralaya Indah Village, Indralaya District. The location selection was carried out purposively. The research was carried out in October 2023. The results of this research show that: (1) There is no difference in the quantity of rice consumed before and after the increase in rice prices. Household needs for rice are permanent because rice is a staple food for Indonesian people. Meanwhile, for rice quality, there was no significant change in the quality of rice consumed by households before and after the increase in rice prices, however, according to the results of the binary logistic regression test, it was stated that price had a real influence on the decision to buy rice based on quality. (2) There is a difference in household food expenditure before and after the increase in rice prices, but there is no change or difference in household expenditure for non-food needs (3) The elasticity of demand for premium and medium rice towards price is inelastic (4) The elasticity of demand for premium rice towards income is Positive means that premium rice is a normal good, households with high or low income can buy premium rice, while the elasticity of demand for medium rice on income is negative, meaning that rice is an inferior good, when household income increases, the demand for medium rice will slowly decrease and change. to higher quality rice.
