Abstract

The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion will reduce the quality and quantity of coal, causing economic, social and environmental losses. Spontaneous combustion is characterized by a gradual increase in temperature to a maximum and a decrease again through the stages of heating and drying, devolatilization and pyrolysis, and charcoal combustion. The aim of the research is to study the relationship pattern between spontaneous combustion temperature and the formation of methane gas emissions in the West Banko temporary stockpile. The method used was a field survey at spontaneous combustion hotspots in the West Banko temporary stockpile by taking 46 data on spontaneous combustion temperature and methane gas emissions using purposive sampling. Correlation and regression results using SPSS Version 22 software show that there is a strong correlation between spontaneous combustion temperature and the formation of methane gas emissions with an R value of 0.916 with a quadratic equation model Y = -0.48 + 0.014 X + (-4.019 x 10- 6 ) X2 . The conclusion of the research shows that spontaneous combustion temperature has a very strong influence on the formation of methane gas emissions in spontaneous combustion of coal. A very high temperature increase reaching 1,742o C will produce methane gas emissions of 117,120 ppm. Efforts to overcome the formation of large methane gas emissions must be carried out using preventive methods for spontaneous combustion of coal in the West Banko temporary stockpile
