Abstract
The productivity of palm oil is projected to continue increasing annually in line with the growing global demand for vegetable oil. Consequently, the generated palm oil mill effluent (POME) is also expected to rise. However, addressing the significant potential of this liquid waste has become a crucial concern for companies striving to maintain environmental stability. Processing such waste in plantation areas allows for its treatment as liquid fertilizer through irrigation, substituting chemical fertilization and maximizing zero waste policies. PT Hindoli Cargill Tanjung Dalam Mill, located in Tanjung Dalam Village, Keluang Subdistrict, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, processes palm oil within the palm plantation area, treating wastewater in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This research aims to evaluate the treated liquid waste from palm oil mills in terms of pH, BOD, oil and grease, COD, and TSS in 8 anaerobic process ponds. The recommended treated liquid waste from palm oil mills, meeting the environmental standards specified in Minister of Environment Decree No. 29 of 2003 for land application, is in Anaerobic Pond 3 with characteristics of BOD 3,750 mg/l and pH 7.43. The efficiency of each pond in treating BOD pollutants can reach 91.16%, COD has efeciency rate for 96,08% and the lowest efficiency in treating oil and grease at 40.50%, while the highest is in TSS with an efficiency of 97.47%. Key words: palm oil, effluent, anaerobic process, land application
