Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infection is a health threat. Treatment of infections using antibiotics has been widely used. However, misuse of antibiotics can cause resistance. One way to overcome typically by creating common fixings as antibacterials. BSF larvae oil (MLB) and tuna fish oil (MIT) are known to have antibacterial potential. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the combination of MLB and MIT against S. aureus. The oil characteristics were tested using the titration method and the fatty acid components were analyzed. The antibacterial activity of MLB and MIT was carried out by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values respectively using the microdilution method and observing bacterial growth. The antibacterial activity of the combination was carried out by determining the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FICI) value. The research results showed that MLB and MIT met the test standards for free fatty acids, saponification value, peroxide value, and iodine value except acid value. The highest fatty acid in MLB and MIT respectively are lauric acid (39.442%) and oleic acid (20.83%). MLB MIC value at a concentration of 6.25% with an inhibition zone of 12.17 mm ± 1.027; and the MIC value of MIT at a concentration of 0.781% with an inhibition zone of 4.83 mm ± 1.247. The MBC results from MLB and MIT stated that the concentration was more than 25%. MIC value for combination of MLB is 6.25% and MIT is 0.781% with an inhibition zone diameter of 7.00 mm ± 2.273. The FICI value for the combination of MLB and MIT against S. aureus bacteria is 2, which shows indifferent characteristics.
