Abstract

athematical modeling and literacy skills are very important abilities for students so that in the future students will be able to solve and face problems. Therefore, this research aims to describe the mathematical modeling and literacy abilities of students at SMP Negeri 6 Indralaya. This research is quantitative descriptive. The research subjects were 24 students in class VIII.2 of SMP Negeri 6 Indralaya Utara. In this research, written tests and interviews were used as data collection techniques. After the test is carried out, 3 students with high, medium and low abilities will be taken for interviews. Based on the results of tests and interviews, it was found that students' modeling abilities were still in the medium category. On average, students can fulfill the first indicator in mathematical modeling, namely identifying problems, but the second and third indicators, namely manipulating problems and creating mathematical models, can only be done by students who have high abilities and some students who have moderate abilities. Meanwhile, for mathematical literacy skills, the average student can fulfill the communication component, only for other components such as mathematising, representation, reasoning and argument, developing strategies for solving problems, using symbolic, formal and technical language and operation can only be met by high ability students and some low ability students. This is because students rarely encounter and work on mathematical literacy problems and are not used to converting real world problems into mathematical models.
