Abstract

The research objectives are to evaluate the growth, yield and yield components of selfed com population, to select the top 10% of entries in each population based on the ear weight, and to identify the growth characteristics and yield components relate to the yield (nutrient efficiency). conducted from May to August 2008 at Agro Techno Park (ATP), Ogan Ilir, South The research was Sumatera. Experimental design was Randomized Complete Block Design (RCB) with three replications. The treatment was slx com populations, Bisma, Bayu, Srikandi Kuning, Lamuru, Sukmaraga and Toray with the total of 235 entries. The selection was based on the mean ear weight of three sample plants for each entry. The results showed that the plant growth of all populations relatively good but the ear weight was low with the mean of 54 - 64 g or equal to 2,97 - 3,54 ton ha'1 due to draught stress d uring anthesis and seed filling. The selected entries of each population (top 10%) had the mean ear w'eight of 93 - 109 g wich was 35 - 46 g higher than population mean with the highest difference for Sukmaraga population. The yield components (ear length and diameter) related to yield for all populations but each population had different growth characteristics that related to yield.
