Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the appropriate germination medium to test the viability of pollen of palm oil {Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) The experiment was conducted at field experiment and laboratory of Tissue Culture Faculty of Agriculture and Biology Laboratory Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Sriwijaya University Indralaya. The experimental begused was Completely Randomized Designed (CRD) with five media combinations which were arranged in 3 replications. Each replication consisted of 15 units, so that there were 75 unit. Experiment which was pollen of palm oil {Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) was field ffom experiment and used explant cultured in pollen germination medium. The experiment results showed that medium M3 (8% sucrose +15 ppm H3BO3 MgS04 7H2O +0,52 mM KNO3) produced maximum germination and growth potential lower about 65.00% viability of about 88,01%. The results showed that the increasing level of growth substence in the media increased germination rate on the hand more, increase of substance the media reduced the ability of pollen to germinate. Pollen tubes were able to survive for 24 hours and pollen tubes begen to disappear after 32 hours after germination.
