Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is a respiratory tract infection that causes up to four million deaths every year, and is the second leading cause of death in children under five (12-59 months). The cause of ARI is poor air quality, both inside and outside the house, whether physically, biologically or chemically. This study investigates the relationship between Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and the incidence of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) in toddlers at Madang Market, Tanggamus, Lampung. This study is a quantitative study with a quantitative analytical survey study design and a cross sectional approach. The sample of this study consisted of 78 mothers who had children under five who were suffering from ARI who were taken using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection used measuring instruments, namely, thermohygrometer, lux meter and roll meter. The results of data analysis using the chi square test indicated that that there was no relationship between house room temperature (p-value = 1.000), humidity in the toddler's room (p-value= 1.000), natural lighting (sunlight) (p-value= 0.461), ventilation toddler's room (p-value= 0.883), and family members who smoke (p-value= 0.549) and the incidence of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) in toddlers. Therefore, education is needed regarding indoor air quality and the dangers of cigarette smoke for toddlers, so that the incidence of ARI in toddlers can be decreased.
