Abstract

Abstract: American fast food restaurants are growing rapidly across countries. Dietary changes were found amongst adolescents in nonmetropolitan areas. Multiple factors may influence an adolescent?s food choice. The increasing prevalence of obesity amongst adolescent and risk for major chronic diseases in adulthood has become serious problem globally. This study employed qualitative approach. Senior high school and college students which age ranging from 15-22 years old (n=30) were interviewed to identify factors which influenced eating behavior. Content analysis technique was employed to indentified environtment factors, perceptions of healthy foods and healthy eating, and knowledge of health risk of consuming fast food. In general, adolescents were well informed about healthy foods and health consequences of eating fast food in future life but they were less informed about concept of balance nutrition. Price was barrier for both of fast foods and healthy foods. Taste, convenience, fast food advertising, peer, lack of time and parents working were promoter of fast food consumption while health concern and knowledge about Indonesia new guidelines of balance nutrition (it is called PUGS) were promoter of healthy eating. Finally, understanding factors which influence adolescents? eating behavior will help the development of effective nutrition intervention. Key words: fast foods, adolescents, behavior, guidelines
