Abstract
Corrosion under insulation is a major problem in the oil and gas industry. This research was conducted to determine the effect of 900 °C annealing heat treatment with a holding time of 60 minutes on the corrosion rate of sea water and swamp water on A36 steel. The research method carried out is in the form of experimental testing using hardness testing, impact testing, corrosion rate analysis, microstructure observation. Based on the results of the tests carried out, the annealing heat treatment of 900 °C increases ductility while also reducing the corrosion rate in ASTM A36. The corrosion that occurs is uniform corrosion, whereas in heat treated specimens there is also grain boundary corrosion which is caused by the process of precipitation of elements in the grain boundary areas and can also occur due to the presence of impurities on the surface of the specimen due to the heating process. The corrosion rate on specimens without insulation slowed down on the 14th day because an oxide layer was formed, while the corrosion rate increased on the insulated specimens on the 14th day because water had entered the insulation. Metallographic observations show that the phases formed from the entire specimen are ferrite and pearlite. Based on the results of the research analysis carried out, the heat treatment process is very influential in preventing the rate of corrosion in ASTM A36.
