Abstract

Excessive sun exposure caused skin redness, inflammation, and even skin cancer. One effective way to protect the skin from the sun is by using sunscreen. Nasi-nasi leaves (Syzygium zeylanicum (L.) DC) had the potential to serve as a natural sunscreen due to their phenolic compounds, which could absorb harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This study aimed to explore the potential of sunscreen gel extracts and fractions of nasi-nasi leaves. The ethanol extract of nasi-nasi leaves (F1) was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol. One of the limitations of nasi-nasi leaves is its intense green color, caused by the extraction of chlorophyll during the maceration process. To mitigate this, chlorophyll removal was performed using vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and thin layer chromatography (TLC), resulting in the F2 fraction from nasi-nasi leaves. In-vitro testing for sunscreen potential was conducted using UV-Visible spectrophotometry, calculating the sun protection factor (SPF) values of extracts and fractions of nasi-nasi leaves at concentrations of concentration of 5%, 7%, and 10%. The highest SPF value was observed at a concentration of 10%. To create sunscreen gel, HPMC and carbopol were combined as gelling agents. The resulting preparation underwent physical evaluation, including organoleptic tests, assessment of homogeneity, pH measurement, viscosity determination, spreadability analysis, adhesiveness assessment, and washability testing. The gel formulation met physical characteristics set for ideal sunscreens. The SPF values for F1 and F2 sunscreen gels were 17.60 and 13.92. F1 exhibited ultra protection, while F2 provided maximum protection. Stability tests confirmed that both formulas remained stable, with no significant pH changes and no syneresis during cycling. Additionally, the area under curve index (AUCI) value obtained in the photostability test exceeded 0.80. In conclusion, formulas of sunscreen gel extracts and fractions of nasi-nasi leaves have potential as sunscreen.
