Abstract
Background : The woman of childbearing age is one of the population at risk for pesticide poisoning with long term negative effects. Negative effects of pesticides exposure in woman of childbearing age can cause reproductive defect. This is related to their involvement in agricultural activities, such as spraying, preparing equipment for spraying, including the mixing of pesticides, removing grass from the plants, looking for bugs, watering and harvesting. Method : This paper discusses the adverse of pesticides to women of childbearing age using literature study. Results : There are many studies have shown the effects of pesticide exposure on reproductive disorders to WCA such as occurrence of spontaneous abortion (Denny 2000, Sulistomo 2007), both of study showed that women who are exposed to pesticides at higher risk of spontaneous abortion than women who were not exposed. Low birth weight (Parera et all 2003), showed that elevated levels of organophosphate pesticide active ingredients klorfirifos in umbilical cord blood is associated with decreased the birth weight and increased the premature birth. Pretrmature birth (Eskenazi et al 2003) showed levels of cholinesterase in the umbilical cord associated with reduced long gestation, and birth defects. Exposed to pesticides also suppress the production of T4 and T3 by the thyroid gland, (Boas et al 2006, Takser et al 2005, Guven et al 1999), showed the relationship between organophosphate exposure with the incidence of sick euthyroid syndrome. Another impact of organophosphate pesticides and carbamate poisoning in WCA is anemia. Conclusion : Conclusions of this paper is important to protect WCA from pesticide exposured in agriculture area because it may cause long term negative effects, by improving the knowledge of Pesticide safe handling for WCA. Key words :, Pesticide, Safe Handling, Women of Childbearing Age
