Abstract
Body odor is a problem that disrupts daily life. Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the cause of body odor. The citral content in lemongrass essential oil has the potential to act as an antibacterial, whereas deodorants in lotion form work directly on local tissue and the desired therapeutic effect is more easily achieved. This research aims to create deodorant lotion with various concentrations of lemongrass essential oil (1%, 3%, and 5%) as an antibacterial agent against S.epidermidis. Evaluation tests include organoleptic, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, irritation, and stability. Data analysis using SPSS revealed that the best formulation is Formula 3 with a 3% concentration. It has slightly thick liquid texture, white color, distinctive scent, homogeneity, pH of 6.20±0.31, viscosity of 7.298±0.198 cP, spreadability of 6.20±0.24 cm, adhesion of 7.02±0.71 seconds, non-irritating, and stable during storage. Antibacterial activity, assessed using the agar well diffusion method, resulted in a zone of inhibition diameter of 11.17±0.41 mm. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for the deodorant lotion with lemongrass essential oil was 2500 ppm, while the control with pure lemongrass essential oil was 5000 ppm. The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) for both the deodorant lotion and pure lemongrass essential oil was 10000 ppm. Formula 3 of the deodorant lotion has the best characterization and strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis.
