Abstract

Oil palm plants have a very important role for Indonesia, especially in the development of national plantations. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a plant with fibrous roots. These fibrous roots grow from the entire base of the stem to a depth of 0.45 m and a length of up to 20 m depending on soil type, nutrient availability, water and consist of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary roots. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of soil chemic properties at various depths and distances from the plants on the distribution of roots of oil palm plants and to determine the distribution of primary, secondary and tertiary roots of oil palm plants at several depths and distances. Sampling using purposive sampling method with a sample of 27 points. Parameters taken included, Root distribution, pH, N-Total, C-Organic, Available P. This research was carried out by drilling the soil at each sample point until the root layer was visible to check the distribution of oil palm. The research has chemical properties in swampland including very acidic soil pH with a value of <4.5. C-Organic value is very low to high with a value of 0.08–5.67%. N-Total soil value is very low to low to high 0.09 – 1.13%. Likewise, the value of P- Available soil is very low to high with a value of 14.11 - 70.34 ppm. Based on data on the total dry weight of the primary, secondary and tertiary roots of trees 1, 2 and 3 based on depth and distance, it was found that the dry weight of the roots was the highest ie at a depth of 0-30 cm with a distance of 50 cm. Root weight at a depth of 31-60 and 61-90 cm was less than at a depth of 0-30 cm, but at a depth of 31-60 cm the root weight was more dominant than at a depth of 61-90 cm Key word : Chemical Properties, Oil Palm, Root System
