Abstract

Seri Kembang I village is one of the villages that has entrepreneurs in the field of coconut shell charcoal production. So far, coconut plants have only been utilized for their fruit, which is processed into copra, oil, and coconut milk for household purposes. However, the coconut shells have not been fully utilized, despite being readily available and inexpensive waste material. The objectives of this study were (1) to describe the coconut shell charcoal processing system in Seri Kembang I Village. (2) Analyzing the added value received from the diversification of coconut shell charcoal products in Seri Kembang I Village. (3) Analyzing internal and external factors in the development of the coconut shell charcoal industry in Seri Kembang I village. (4) Analyzing the business development strategy of Coconut Shell Charcoal in Seri Kembang I Village. The research was conducted in Seri Kembang I Village, Payaraman District, Ogan Ilir Regency. Data collection was carried out in August 2023. The research method used is the survey method and the method used in sampling is purposive sampling method. The data collected in this study are primary data and secondary data. The results of the study show that the stages of processing coconut shell into charcoal include drying coconut shell, burning coconut shell into charcoal, separating ash from coconut shell charcoal, and packaging coconut shell charcoal. The value-added ratio obtained in the processing of coconut shell into charcoal is 41.25% so that based on the criteria for determining the level of value-added ratio, the processing of coconut shell into charcoal produces a high added value of more than 40%. Internal factors in the coconut shell charcoal industry in Seri Kembang I Village consist of strengths and weaknesses. Strengths include good quality coconut shell, experience in the coconut shell charcoal business, and sufficient capital. Weakness factors include the production location being quite far from the market, poor bookkeeping records, and not having a label/trade mark. External factors consist of opportunities and threats. Opportunity factors include easy-to-find raw materials, public awareness of the usefulness of coconut shells, and high market opportunities. Threat factors include the emergence of new competitors, unpredictable weather, and customer complaints about the quality of the charcoal. The development strategy that should be carried out in the coconut shell charcoal industry in Seri Kembang I Village is located in quadrant I (S-O/Aggressive Strategy), which uses more strengths to take advantage of existing opportunities and focuses on existing potential.
