Abstract

ABSTRAK The Medical and Non-Medical Factors Associated with Stunting in Infants and Toddler Aged 3-59 Months Background: There is currently no published research on the factors associated with stunting in South Sumatra and there is no research that diagnoses stunting comprehensively. Meanwhile, the prevalence of patients with short stature in RSMH is relatively high, exceeding 50% within the last year. Objective: To determine the proportion of stunting in infants and children aged 3-59 months at RSMH and to identify medical and non-medical factors influencing stunting in these children. Methods: An analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design was conducted on infants and children aged 3-59 months at RSMH from April to September 2023. Results: A total of 183 subjects who met the criteria, with a stunting proportion of 35.5%. Among them, 39.6% of 101 male subjects and 38.2% of 123 subjects aged ≤ 2 years experienced stunting. The presence of medical factors such as chronic infectious disease (p = 0.001, OR 4.132 (95% CI 1.909-8.943)) and chronic disease (p = 0.001, OR 3.022 (95% CI 1.561-5.850)) significantly increased the risk of stunting. Non-medical factors such as low paternal education also increased the risk of stunting (p = 0.016, OR 2.454 (95% CI 1.169-5.151)). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between medical factors (chronic infectious disease and chronic disease) and non-medical factors (paternal education) with the occurrence of stunting. Keywords: Stunting, Medical Factors, Non-Medical Factors.
