Abstract

The aims of this research is to evaluate soil characteristics on rubber plantation and its suitability for the possibility to be sugarcane plantation. In addition to figure out the input recommendations to determine potential suitability for sugarcane. The activity carried out in Lajuperdana Indah Company, Cempaka and Semendawai Barat Sub District, OKU Timur District, South Sumatera from April to May 2014. Soil analysis carried out in the Laboratory of Chemistry, Biology and Soil Fertility, Soil Department, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya. Data collecting method used semidetail survey with a scale 1:100.000 in 10.000 ha of study sites.. The determination in the fleld observated by 5 land units are spread in research sites consist of Af. 1.2.2 for 7 points, Idf.3.1 for 3 points, Idf.2.1 and Au. 1.2.1 for each 2 points, Idf.1.0 for 1 point.Soil sampling conducted in a composite of five different drilling points on 0-30 cm layer. Land characteristics observed in the field are land drainage class, root depth, and topography. Land characteristics observed in the laboratory are pH, CEC, total N, P available and K available. Matching characteristics obtained was assessed according to land suitability criteria of rubber plant and sugarcane by CSR/FAO Staff (1983). The results showed that the actual land suitability on the study sites are N (not suitable) with limiting factors are P avaibility very low and somewhat shallow of root depth for rubber plant and N (not suitable) with the only limiting factor is P availability very low for sugarcane. According to potential suitability on study sites for rubber plant is N (not suitable) limited by root depth. While for sugarcane is S3 (marginally suitable) limited by soil texture. Efforts to improve land characterisics in the study sites include fertilization, lime, organic matter, and the construction of drainage channels to reduce the existing limiting factors. While limiting factor on soil texture and root depth are not possible to be improved.
