Abstract

The large increase in production of palm empty fruit bunch waste in the palm industry has not been utilized optimal. Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (PEFB) must be further processed with the aim of reducing pollution and increasing use value. The aim of this research is to produce syngas products by utilizing PEFB waste using an Al-Cr metal pillared bentonite catalyst. The bentonite pillarization process using Al-Cr metal aims to increase the specific surface area, basal distance, and surface acidity thereby increasing the catalytic activity of the catalyst for the subsequent gasification process. Gasification is carried out at temperatures of 450, 500, 550, 600°C. The addition of Al-Cr metal pillared bentonite catalyst, the H2 concentration has increased significantly. The effect of increasing temperature can increase the H2 content by consuming CO within a certain limit time. At a temperature of 600°C for variation of 20% wt, the Al-Cr metal pillared bentonite catalyst is the best working condition in producing syngas in PEFB gasification. Gasification efficiency is seen from the high H2/CO ratio value of 1.96. The calorific value in terms of the optimum HHV and LHV values is 16.60 MJ/Nm3 and 14.92 MJ/Nm3. PEFB gasification using an Al-Cr metal pillared bentonite catalyst is suitable for the production of good environmentally fuel.
