Abstract

Fossil energy has three main weakness which are the source in nature are limited, can cause damage to the environment during the process of exploration and production, as well can cause gobal warming from the gas it produces as the result of the combustion. Renewable energy can be used as an altemative energy to replace fossil energy, in this case wind energy can be gained using the wind turbine. Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is one kind of wind turbine. VAWT has an axis or main rotor shaft which arrenged vertical as it named. The main advantage of VAWT is able to leverage the wind from all directions. Combined turbine Savonius-Darrieus is the integration of Savonius blade and Darrieus blade in one axis turbine where the Savonius blade able to provide starting torque likely to be early movers of combined turbine while Darrieus blade able to improve efficiency when the turbine has been spinning since the drag force of the Savonius blade. The research began with doing literature studies form various joumals, books and other resources in favor to support the research. After doing literature studies form various source, the dimension and the number of blades is determined and then proceed to 3D design stage using Software design Solidworks. Then proceed to produce of wind turbine, when its done then we continue to testing process using wind tunnel. The data obtained from the testing process is then examined and discussed by the equations described in the basic theory to get efficiency value and power generated by the turbine. Then the results will be processed into tables and charts. In this study the object is the combined turbine Savonius-Darrieus which has two Savonius blades and two Darrieus blades NACA 0020 with Darrieus rod length variation and loading variation. Based on the testing that has been done gained the result of peformance combined Savonius-Darrieus turbine NACA 0020 with 7 cm chord, which has 17 cm Darrieus rod length generate 0,639 W maximum power at tip speed ratio 0,988 at wind speed 7 m/s and 3,891 % maximum efficiency. While for combined Savonius-Darrieus turbine which has 15 cm Darrieus rod length the result is increased which generate 1,111 W maximum power at tip speed ratio 1,103 at wind speed 7 m/s and 6,193 % maximum efficiency. This means at the test condition, Darrieus blades on combined Savonius-Darrieus turbine are able to minimize drag force that produced by Savonius blades appear on the tip speed ratio it produces which is greater than 1. Then, for combined Savonius-Darrieus turbine which has 13 cm Darrieus rod length generate 0,75 W maximum power at tip speed ratio 0,395 at wind speed 7 m/s and 4,826 % maximum efficiency. It appears that this turbine produces small tip speed ratio that is below 1 , this is because Darrieus blades aren’t able to minimize drag force produced by Savonius blades.
