Abstract

People with disabilities are a group that still experiences discriminatory treatment in society. The media, especially film, plays an important role in shaping and changing society's view of people with disabilities. Champions is a film that tells the story of a former basketball coach, Marcus, who is sentenced to perform community service by becoming the coach of a basketball team whose members consist of people with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of this study was to find out how the representation of people with disabilities in the film Champions. Data is obtained through the results of documentation and literature studies with qualitative research methods. This study used Roland Barthes' Semiotics analysis and the results of the analysis were then grouped into stereotypical concepts against people with disabilities in the media proposed by Barnes. The results showed that the representation of people with disabilities in the film Champions still leads to three out of eleven stereotypes of people with disabilities, namely people with disabilities as normal people, as people who have superpowers and magicand as burdens. In addition, the portrayal of people with disabilities in this film also still leads to several other stereotypes, where negatively, they are portrayed as inspiration porn, supercrip, unusual or strange people and vulnerable to discrimination and exploitation because of their disability.
