Abstract

2D game is a type of video game that takes place in a two-dimensional environment, which means that it is limited to two main axes, the X-axis and the Y-axis. In 2D games, the graphics and objects in the game are usually displayed in two dimensions without any 3D effects, so they appear flat on the screen. With the gaming industry experiencing rapid development, 2D games remain a popular choice. The use of visual effects in 2D games is important in improving the visual quality and gaming experience. This study aims to analyze the effect of visual effects in 2D game programming on the level of difficulty and player satisfaction. The research method used the GUESS-18 scale to evaluate player perceptions. The main findings showed significant differences in difficulty and satisfaction between two 2D games, Ori the Blind Forest and Cuphead, specifically in playfulness and visual aesthetics. The analysis showed that the percentage of player satisfaction in Cuphead was higher (4.21%) than Ori the Blind Forest (4.13%), while the game difficulty of Ori the Blind Forest was lower (2.79%) than Cuphead (2.92%). This research provides insights for game developers to optimize visual effects to enhance the 2D gaming experience.
