Abstract

Sponges with the types Stylissa massa and Ephydatia sp. from Enggano Island is a marine biota that has secondary metabolite compounds that have the potential to have antioxidant activity and are toxic. This study was to explore the potential of antioxidant activity and toxicity of both sponge species, S. massa and Ephydatia sp. The DPPH method is the method used to explore antioxidant activity based on the IC50 value, while the BSLT method is used to evaluate toxicity based on the LC50 value. Samples were collected through purposive random sampling, followed by sample preparation, maceration, and extraction of active compounds. Qualitative phytochemical analysis and GC-MS testing were carried out to identify the active compounds. The results obtained showed that both species had very weak antioxidant activity, with S. mass having an IC50 of 526.28 ppm and Ephydatia sp. of 5816.25 ppm. However, the two showed quite significant differences, with S. mass having an LC50 value of 647.352 ppm and Ephydatia sp. has an LC50 value of 205.116 ppm. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids and steroids in S. massa and steroids as well as triterpenoids in Ephydatia sp. The GC-MS analysis found that there was a dominance of bioactive compounds in the form of ethers and fatty acids, which have pharmacological potential in the form of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial. This study provides additional insights into the potential use of Stylissa massa Sponge and Ephydatia sp. as a source of bioactive compounds with significant pharmacological activity
