Abstract

Colorectal cancer is a cancer with increasing prevalence globally. Tumor budding, which characterizes the morphology of tumor invasiveness, is recognized as an important prognostic factor in this type of cancer. Although many studies have been conducted to determine the relationship between the degree of tumor budding with clinical and histopathological characteristics, a clear consensus still does not exist, especially in the context of the population in Indonesia, including at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. This study used a retrospective approach by collecting data from the medical records of patients diagnosed with colorectal adenocarcinoma at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. The study sample included clinical characteristics such as age, gender, and tumor location, and histopathological characteristics such as degree of differentiation, depth of tumor invasion (T), lymph node metastasis status (N), and lymphatic and perineural invasion. The degree of tumor budding was evaluated from the histopathological specimens of the patients using criteria from the International Tumor Budding Consensus Conference (ITBCC). The collected data were processed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel programs and presented in the form of frequency tables and narratives. The distribution of tumor budding degree showed 59.2% of patients had low degree. Clinical characteristics: the majority were ≥50 years old (71.1%), male (71.1%), and tumors in the left colon (75%). Histopathologic characteristics: 75% with low degree of differentiation, 59.2% with T3 tumor invasion depth, 44.7% without lymph node metastasis (N0), 90.8% without distant metastasis (M0), 55.3% with lymphatic invasion, and 66.2% without perineural invasion. Statistical analysis showed significant relationships between the degree of tumor budding and patient age, depth of tumor invasion (T), lymph node metastasis status (N), and lymphatic invasion. No significant association with gender, tumor location, and perineural invasion. Thus, the degree of tumor budding in colorectal adenocarcinoma patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang was significantly associated with age, depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis status, and lymphatic invasion.
