Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of temperature and heating time on the pretreatment of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB). The pretreatment process was carried out to delignify the OPEFB using ionic liquid in the form of 1-Butyl-3-Methylimidazolium Chloride. Analysis of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin content using the Chesson method. The optimal condition of the delignification process obtained a high percentage of lignin reduction of 81.23% at a temperature of 140°C and a heating time of 1 hour. The results of the high percentage of lignin reduction were carried out XRD characterization to show changes in the degree of crystallinity and SEM-EDS to show changes in morphology and elemental composition in OPEFB before and after delignification. The results of XRD analysis showed a decrease in the degree of crystallinity by 1.25 nm in OPEFB after delignfication. SEM-EDS analysis showed that the delignified OPEFB had fibers with a size that appears smaller than OPEFB before delignification.
