Abstract
This study investigated the pretreatment of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB) using ionic liquids (ILs) to understand their impact on reducing sugars produced during hydrolysis. The pretreatment of OPEFB was conducted with imidazolium chloride [IM][Cl] ILs at varying weights of 2.5 g, 5 g, 7.5 g, and 10 g, followed by hydrolysis with 2% dilute sulfuric acid. The lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents were analyzed using the Chesson method, while the characterization of OPEFB before and after pretreatment was carried out using XRD and SEM-EDS. The reducing sugar content from hydrolysis was analyzed using the DNS method. The results showed that before pretreatment, the lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents were 25.58%, 29.00%, and 11.08%, respectively. Pretreatment with 2.5 g ILs resulted in the largest reduction in lignin content from 25.58% to 12.4%, with the highest hemicellulose content being 25.68%. Meanwhile, using 10 g ILs showed the highest cellulose content of 52.12%. The crystal size of OPEFB after pretreatment decreased by 19.4379%. The surface structure of OPEFB after pretreatment became uneven, rough, more porous, and showed the presence of silica bodies. Hydrolysis of OPEFB pretreated with 2.5 g ILs showed the highest increase in reducing sugar content of 0.10498 mg/mL, compared to 0.00153 mg/mL in untreated OPEFB. These results indicate that pretreatment with ILs and heating reduces lignocellulose content, alters the crystalline structure of cellulose, changes the surface structure of OPEFB, and increases the hydrolysis capability using dilute sulfuric acid.
