Abstract

Economic growth in Indonesia has driven an increase in electricity consumption within the manufacturing sector, which is rising faster compared to other countries. The manufacturing industry, heavily reliant on energy, faces challenges in managing energy consumption and rising production costs. Machining processes, especially turning, are crucial for mass production efficiency. Monitoring parameters such as cutting speed, feeding, and depth of cut can enhance machining accuracy and efficiency. This study analyzes the factors influencing electricity consumption during the turning process, focusing on the variations in feeding and depth of cut. The research was conducted using a JET Equipment & Tool BD-1336T lathe machine, with AISI 1045 carbon steel as the subject material. Electricity consumption was measured using a digital clamp meter. The results indicate that increasing the depth of cut at a constant feeding rate leads to higher electricity consumption, while increasing the feeding rate at a constant depth of cut reduces electricity consumption. For instance, at a 0.20 mm depth of cut, increasing the feeding rate from 0.091 mm/rev to 0.106 mm/rev decreases electricity consumption from 0.0055594 kWh to 0.00539 kWh. Additionally, increasing both parameters reduces the specific energy consumption, thereby improving cutting efficiency. For example, increasing the depth of cut from 0.20 mm to 0.40 mm at a 0.091 mm/rev feeding rate reduces the specific energy consumption from 45.7792 kJ/cm³ to 24.4959 kJ/cm³, demonstrating improved energy efficiency in the machining process.
