Abstract

This research aims to examine and analyze the effect of competition and efficiency on bank stability in ASEAN-5 countries. Competition Variable is quantified by lerner, efficiency is measured by the BOPO ratio and bank stability is measured by z-score and NPL. The population in this research are commercial banks from ASEAN-5 countries. The purposive sampling method was used in sampling, by using 51 commercial banks from ASEAN-5 countries. This research uses panel data using fixed effect regression estimation models with robust standard errors and random effect models. The research results show that competition has a positive and significant effect on stability as proxied by the z-score, on the other hand competition has no effect on stability as quantifies by NPL. Efficiency has a positive and significant effect on stability as measured by z-score. However, efficiency has a negative and significant effect on stability as measured by NPL. A control variable is also used in this research, namely inflation has a negative and significant effect on stability as measured by z-score, on the other hand it has no effect on stability as quantified by NPL. Bank size has no effect on stability as measured by z-score. However, bank size has a negative and significant effect on bank stability as by NPL.
