Abstract

This research aims to determine the role of social support and each type (emotional support, instrumental support, informational support and companionship support) of shyness in unemployed young adults. The hypothesis in this research consists of a major hypothesis, namely that there is a role of social support in shyness. The minor hypothesis is that there is a role for emotional support, instrumental support, informational support, and companionship support on shyness. The population in this study was unemployed young adults, with a total sample of 262 subjects. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The measuring instrument used is a scale compiled by the researcher himself by referring to the symptoms of shyness from Henderson and Zimbardo (1998) and referring to the types of social support from Sarafino and Smith (2011). Data analysis in this study used multiple regression analysis. The research results show that social support has a role in shyness in unemployed young adults, with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05) and an R-Square value of 0.323. The results of this study also show that the types of social support, namely emotional support (β = -1.366, p = 0.000) and informational support (β = -0.984, p = 0.002) have a negative and significant role on shyness in unemployed young adults. The types of social support, namely instrumental support (β = 0.306, p = 0.302) and companionship support (β = -0.240, p = 0.396) do not play a role in shyness. Meanwhile, emotional support contributed to shyness by 19.5% and informational support by 12.93%.
