Abstract

Sungsang village is located at the mouth of the Musi River, which is a semi-enclosed body of water in free contact with the sea. Microplastics are a type of plastic waste that is smaller than 5 mm in size and are grouped into two types of primary and secondary microplastics. Despite the fact that there are still many fiddler crabs in mangrove ecosystems, human activities such as residential areas that produce domestic waste and can affect the abundance of fiddler crab species. The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics of fiddler crabs, analyse the microplastic content and determine the type of microplastic polymer. This study was conducted at three station points using 9 fiddler crab samples. The results of this study showed that there were three types of fiddler crabs (Uca spp), namely Uca perplexa, Uca forcipata and Uca tetragonon. The content of microplastics in fiddler crab samples was found to be three types, namely fibre, film and fragments. The peak wave numbers in the types of Uca perplexa and Uca forcipata have the same value group classified as Polypropylene and Polyvinyl Chloride while the Uca tetragonon polymer wave is classified as Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer.
