Abstract

Drying coffee using a drying house has several advantages, including being weather-independent. Coffee dried in this way can avoid contamination from rainwater, which can cause damage to the coffee beans due to the growth of microorganisms. Damage to coffee beans leads to lower quality coffee with a lower economic value in the market. This study aims to determine the performance of a solar dryer dome-type drying house for drying robusta and arabica coffee beans. The chosen design method is a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of two factors: the variety factor (A) with two levels, A1 = arabica coffee beans, A2 = robusta coffee beans. The time factor (B) consists of three levels: B1 = 1 day, B2 = 2 days, B3 = 3 days. Each treatment was repeated three times. The results of this study indicate that the reduction in moisture content of arabica coffee beans on the first, second, and third days was 13.10%, 5.45%, and 3.40%, respectively, which was higher than the reduction in moisture content of robusta coffee beans on the first, second, and third days, which was 12.20%, 4.40%, and 1.85%, respectively. The drying rate on the first day for both types of arabica and robusta coffee beans was higher compared to the drying rate on the second and third days. The drying yield of arabica coffee beans was 26, 61%, lower than the 30.46% yield for robusta coffee beans.
