Abstract

This research aims to describe the form of language politeness strategies and the characteristics of verbal and non-verbal language politeness strategies in the first presidential debate in 2024. In addition, this research aims to analyze the implications for Indonesian language learning. This research uses ethnographic method. The data collection techniques used in the research are listening technique and note-taking technique. The data analysis technique used in this research is ethnographic technique. This research uses Brown and Levinson's theoretical basis. Based on the results of the research, it is known that there are twelve forms of positive language politeness and four forms of negative language politeness contained in the first debate of the Indonesian presidential candidate in 2024. Twelve forms of positive language politeness include (1) giving attention to speech partners, (2), exaggerating interest, support, sympathy for speech partners (3) using forms of group identity, (4) seeking agreement, (5) avoiding opposition, (6) assuming / increasing / emphasizing equality, (7) jokes, (8) offering / promising, (9) being optimistic, (10) involving speakers and speech partners in activities, (11) giving or asking for reasons, (12) statements of reciprocal rights or obligations. Four forms of negative politeness strategies include; (1) indirect expression (2) question (fence), (3) give respect, (4) apology. The most dominant strategy is the positive politeness strategy. Each strategy has verbal and non-verbal language characteristics. Verbal language characteristics are viewed from grammatical features and sociolinguistic features. Meanwhile, non-verbal language characteristics are reviewed from the tone of voice and expression of the speaker. This research also has implications for Indonesian language learning at the high school and junior high school levels. The results of this research can be used as teaching materials in learning such as at the high school level can be used as teaching materials on debate text material. While at the junior high school level, it can be used as teaching material on response text material.
