Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the General Election Commission (KPU) of South Sumatra in increasing political participation among first-time voters through social media. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, employing the role theory of Soerjono Soekamto, which consists of ideal roles and factual roles. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with KPU South Sumatra officials and student inters at the KPU, observations, and document analysis. Additionally, secondary data were obtained from official KPU reports, relevant literature, and media publications. The results of the study show that the KPU of South Sumatra has utilized various social media platform such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to disseminate information related to elections, political education, and the importance of voter participation. Social media is used as a tool to quickly and widely spread information and to directly interact with first-time voters. The content presented includes infographics, educational videos, live broadcasts, and interactive campaigns that attract the interest of first-time voters. Furthermore, this study also finds that while the use of social media is effective in increasing the participation of first-time voters, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. These challenges include limited internet access in some areas, a lack of digital literacy among first-time voters, and the presence of inaccurate information or hoaxes that can influence public opinion. In conclusion, the KPU of South Sumatra plays a signicant role in increasing political participation among first-time voters through social media. However, to achieve more optimal results, cooperation from varius parties, including the government, educational institutions, and the community, is needed to overcome the existing challenges. Thus, political participation among first-time voters can be continuously improved to support a better democratic process in Indonesia.
