Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the best mixture of clay, sand, and wood dust used in fabricating the perforated drainage pipe. This research was conducted at a ceramic home industry center, Payakabung Village, Ogan Ilir district for fabricating the drainage pipes. Drainage capability test of the pipes was conducted at the Land - Water laboratory, and the pipe strength was examined at the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Sriwijaya University. The research was done ffom May until November 2013. Perforated drainage pipes were fabricated with five combination namely Co, Ci, C2, C3 and C4. The combination such as follow : Co (100% clay, 0% sand, 0% wood dust), Ci (80% clay, 10% sand, 10% wood dust), C2 (70% clay, 15% sand, 15% wood dust), C3 (60% clay, 20% sand, 20% wood dust), C4 (50% clay, 25% sand, 25% wood dust). The Laboratory test showed that the C4 pipe with 50% clay, 25% sand, 25% wood dust under the conventional drainage mode with 20 cm of water above the pipe showed the best drainage. This C4 pipe drained 65, 48.8, 45 seconds faster that of C|, C2, and C3 respectively. Under the condition of controlled drainage, the C4 pipe with 20 cm of water above the pipe drained 0.03 1/sec, 0.06 1/sec and 0.04 1/sec faster than Ci, C2, and C3 respectively. The strength of the pipes showed that the C4 pipe has 60 Kgf with 10 cm2 surface area. This mean that 1 cm2 of the C4 pipe is able to stand the 6.0 Kg load.
