Abstract

The objectives of the research was to compare the feeding and egg laid by L. sativae on cucumber and tomato. The research was conducted in Entomological Laboratory, Departement of Plant Pest and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from September 2005 until April 2006, comprised of observation of number of feeding picrcing traces, number of cggs laid and host leaf areas. On the observation of feeding piercing by the adull of L. sativae, the tesi with no host species selcction showed that host species significantly affected the feeding piercing by the L. sativae adult. On cucumber, the average of feeding piercing trace number was (143.58 ± 51.67) piercing which was significantly different from those on tomato (61.00 ± 83.50) piercing, the test with free host species selection also showed that host species significantly affected feeding piercing by L. sativae on cucumber with average piercing number was (126.13 ± 63.47) piercing. On the observation of egg number, there was difference between the result of observation with no host species selection and free host species selection tests, where host species significantly affected the egg number of L. sativae laid on leaf. On cucumber the number of egg was (7.47 ± 5.70) eggs/10 female adults which significantly different from those on tomato (1.94 db 1.14) eggs/10 female adults. On free host selection test, the host species did not significantly affect the number of egg was of L. sativae. The egg number on cucumber was (12.47 ± 13.70) eggs/20 female adults which was not significantly differcnt from those on tomato (2.76 ± 1.76) eggs/20 female adults. On the observation of host leaf areas, it was found that on no host selection test. the host speeies was signifantly affected the leaf areas. On cucumber, the leaf areas was (407.18 ± 64.79) mm2 which was significantly diffcrent from those of tomato (260 ± 29.77) mm2. On free host selection, the host speeies also significantly affected leaf areas. On cucumber, the average of leaf area was (464,75 ± 68,36) mm2 which was significantly ditYerent from those of tomato (346.50 ± 43.90) mm2
