Abstract

Spent bleaching earth (SBE) is an industrial waste, mainly produced from vegetable oil processing that can pose a fire hazard (i.e. spontaneous combustion), as it usually contains 20-40% oil by weight. Pyrolysis of Spent Bleaching Earth has been processed by extraction method using n-hexane, methanol or steam as solvent and is still very rarely processed into liquid fuel. This research aims to process Spent Bleaching Earth waste into liquid fuel by pyrolysis method, where from the results of this study at a temperature of 600oC with a time of 90 minutes produced the highest density pyrolysis oil of 992.8 kg/m3 and the highest viscosity of 31.21 cst with a calorific value of 40.63 and a flash point of 36oC. The pyrolysis oil of Spent Bleaching Earth waste produced the highest phenol compound composition of 21.18%. The area and char yield of Spent Bleaching Earth left over from the pyrolysis process contained 54%.
