Abstract
Background: Root canal treatment aims to eliminate bacteria and prevent recurring infections. Root canal disinfection remains a major challenge in root canal treatment and is a key factor in its success. Conventional disinfection methods are often less effective due to the complexity of root canal anatomy. The laser method is an evolving treatment approach for root canal disinfection, demonstrating greater effectiveness due to its ability to penetrate hard-to-reach areas and significantly reduce bacterial counts. The combination of laser and chemical disinfectants has proven more effective in enhancing the success of root canal treatment. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of the laser method on root canal disinfection. Methods: A literature review was conducted using data from PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect over the past 10 years. The selected journals met inclusion and exclusion criteria, then were analyzed using CRIS and ARRIVE guidelines and summarized to gather data on the effect of the laser method on root canal disinfection in the reviewed journals. Results: This literature review successfully synthesized 18 journals discussing the impact of laser methods on root canal disinfection, with four different types of lasers and methods. Conclusion: The use of laser methods has been proven to be effective in enhancing root canal disinfection compared to conventional methods, significantly reducing pathogenic microorganisms. The efficacy of laser application is influenced by various parameters such as laser type, wavelength, power, and exposure time. Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers have shown the most promising results for disinfection, with Er:YAG offering superior deep cleaning and minimal damage to dentin, albeit at a higher cost and with limited penetration. While Er,Cr:YSGG is effective, it carries a higher risk of thermal effects. Diode lasers, on the other hand, are more affordable with deeper penetration but are less effective in activating irrigation solutions and may increase the risk of damaging surrounding tissues due to elevated temperatures.
