Abstract
Chest pain is the most frequently reported primary symptom in STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction) patients, characterized by persistent and sudden onset. Managing chest pain is crucial, as uncontrolled pain can lead to physiological and psychological complications, such as respiratory disturbances and discomfort. Although pharmacological therapy effectively reduces pain in STEMI patients, pain can re-emerge as medication effects wear off. Therefore, non-pharmacological therapy can serve as an adjunct to alleviate pain and reduce the duration of pain episodes. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used is thermotherapy. This study aims to apply nursing care using thermotherapy to reduce pain levels in patients experiencing chest pain. A qualitative research method with a case study approach was used on three STEMI patients. Each patient received thermotherapy with a warm compress once daily for three consecutive days, with each session lasting 10-20 minutes. The results showed a reduction in pain levels among all three patients, with pain decreasing from moderate to mild. Thermotherapy involves the application of warm compresses to the painful area, in this case, the chest. Thermotherapy works by dilating coronary arteries and accelerating the angiogenesis process, which can improve myocardial perfusion. Enhanced myocardial perfusion increases myocardial oxygenation and facilitates the removal of inflammatory mediators from the injured myocardium. Additionally, thermotherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, endogenous compounds similar to morphine, which help relieve pain. Thermotherapy can be applied to reduce chest pain levels in STEMI.
