Abstract

PrEP is one of the HIV prevention efforts through the provision of prophylactic antiretroviral aimed at key populations, especially men sex men. The use of PrEP accompanied by condoms can reduce the risk of HIV by 90%. PrEP began to be implemented in Indonesia in 2021, and implementation in South Sumatra Province began in 2024. Palembang city was chosen as the first location for PrEP implementation due to its high number of at-risk populations and the large number of health facilities providing HIV services. This study aims to explore the readiness of men sex men to accept PrEP as an HIV prevention effort in Palembang City. This research was conducted using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach with data collection techniques using in-depth interviews, FGDs, observation. Data were analysed thematically for patterns or themes of research results. Data validity uses the triangulation method. The informants in this study were 20 people, 15 MSM and 5 people from sectors related to the implementation of the PrEP programme. These informants provided sufficient information about the implementation of PrEP starting from the South Sumatra Provincial Health Office, Puskesmas, and the MSM community under the Intan Maharani Foundation as health partners in reaching at-risk populations. The results of the study found eight main themes namely MSM knowledge about HIV, HIV risk factors, MSM sexual behaviour, reasons for being MSM, compliance with condom use during sexual intercourse, MSM knowledge about PrEP, concerns about PrEP, and readiness of MSM in accepting PrEP.The analysis shows that MSM with diverse knowledge about HIV are ready to accept PrEP despite having concerns and limited knowledge about the implementation of the PrEP programme itself. Awareness of risky sexual behaviour makes MSM willing to access PrEP. The conclusion of this study is the importance of cross-program and cross-sector coordination in improving socialisation about PrEP so that the coverage of PrEP users among MSM can increase.
