Abstract

Pesticides are chemicals used to control pests, plant diseases, and weeds. One of the sectors that utilize pesticides the most is horticultural commodities. Horticultural products tend to be perishable and have high visual quality standards such as color, freshness, and shape, making them vulnerable to exposure to pesticide residues. The use of pesticides in the horticultural sector is carried out on a large scale and continuously during the growing season. This study aims to determine the level of compliance of horticultural farmers in the lowlands in using pesticides and the impact of pesticides on pest and disease attacks, natural enemy populations, and residue content of pesticide active ingredients in agricultural products. This research was conducted on the land of lowland horticultural farmers in Inderalaya District, North Indralaya District, and Muara Kuang District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra from May 2023 to October 2023. The results showed that farmers with low pesticide compliance scores had fields with high pest populations and disease incidence, and low abundance of natural enemies. Farmers with a high pesticide compliance score have fields with low pest populations and disease incidence, and high abundance of natural enemies. The results of the pesticide residue test on agricultural products owned by farmers with a low pesticide compliance score found the active ingredients Amitraz with a level of 0.02 mg/kg and Chlorantraniliprole with a level of 0.14 mg/kg. The results of the pesticide residue test on agricultural products owned by farmers with a medium pesticide compliance score were Amitraz with a level of 0.02 mg/kg and Chlorantraniliprole with a level of 0.18 mg/kg. The content of pesticide residues in farmer-owned agricultural products with a high score was not detected.
