Abstract

Anemia is a condition characterized by a decrease in erythrocytes and hemoglobin, leading to reduced oxygen-carrying capacity. Globally, the prevalence of iron deficiency is 30%. Risk factors for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) include age, residence, education level, pregnancy status, menstruation status, nutritional status, and comorbid disease. This study aims to analyze the distribution and relationships of these factors with IDA severity in female patients diagnosed with IDA. This observational analytic study used a cross-sectional design at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang, Indonesia. The population included 123 patients meeting inclusion criteria, with 83 excluded. A total sampling method was used, and data from 40 patients were collected from medical records. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted using SPSS version 27 and Fisher’s exact test. Descriptive analysis results showed most female IDA cases were moderate-to-severe (87.5%), aged >19 years (65%), resided in Palembang (65%), had middle-to-high education levels (62.5%), were not pregnant (90%), had experienced menstruation (65%), had good nutritional status (55%), and comorbid disease (77.5%). Inferential analysis found significant relationships between IDA severity with age (p=0.043) and menstruation status (p=0.043). No significant relationships were found with residence (p=0.322), education level (p=0.056), pregnancy status (p=1.000), nutritional status (p=0.355), or comorbid disease (p=0.311). There is a significant association between age and menstruation status with the severity of IDA in female patients with IDA at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital.
