Abstract

Burns have high morbidity and mortality rates in the community. The prevalence of burns in Indonesia increased from 0.7% in 2013 to 1.3% in 2018. Burn trauma affects the patient's quality of life physically, psychologically, and socially. Various aspects such as the level of depth, burn area, and scar can affect the patient's quality of life. The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics and quality of life of burn patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. An observational descriptive study with a cross-section design was conducted at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital. The sample consisted of burn patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through the SF-36 questionnaire for quality of life and medical records for patient characteristics. Of the 22 subjects, the majority were aged 41–60 years (54.5%) and men (77.3%). Electrical burns (47.8%) and deep-dermal depth (33.3%) dominate. Based on the SF-36 questionnaire, 59.1% had a good quality of life overall, with the domains of physical functioning (63.6%), bodily pain (72.7%), general health (59.1%), role emotional (59.1%), social functioning (81.8%), and mental health (72.7%) showing good results. However, 63.6% of the subjects had poor quality of life in the domain of role physical.
